DSF ET Program Needs Assessment Essential tremor (ET) is a neurological disorder characterized by uncontrollable and rhythmic shaking or trembling in one or more parts of the body while in use. Although the disorder is most common in older adults, it can affect individuals of any age including middle-aged or young adults and children. It has been reported during infancy.
Tremor in the hands can impair the ability to eat, dress write, and perform household activities and functions in the workplace. Many people with ET are too embarrassed to go out in public and remain isolated in their homes, which can lead to depression. ET affects both men and women and individuals of every race or ethnicity.
