The Aiken Wine & Sign Evening with Brad Carter for ET. Team DSF
The story of Brad Carter is one of hard work, toil, tragedy and more than anything, triumph. Hailing from Macon, Georgia, Brad would make money playing his music in bars about 5 nights a weeks. In 2003, Brad came home one night and stumbled upon Phil Hartman's documentary on TV. He was so inspired by the story of Phil, that shortly after Brad packed his bags and headed out west to California to pursue his dreams of the silver screen and the big stage.

After suffering from brain disease and tremors that caused his hands to shake, he underwent brain surgery in 2013, which he recorded and posted on YouTube. The video went viral, and he became known as the "guy playing guitar during brain surgery".
In 2010, Carter made guest appearances in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Disney's Zeke and Luther, Justified, True Blood, and New Girl. He portrayed Rankin in one episode of the Showtime series Dexter, wherein his character was killed.
In 2012–13, Carter made guest appearances in The Mentalist, Bones, Longmire, and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.
In 2014, Carter made guest appearances in two episodes of HBO's True Detective opposite Matthew McConaughey as Charlie Lange, an ex-husband of murdered Dora Lange, the case around which the series revolves. Later, he portrayed Leland Gruen, an Aryan Brotherhood member, in three episodes of FX's Sons of Anarchy. Then he played John Stokes, a stockyard master, in the miniseries Ascension.
In 2015, Carter starred in the film Dixieland, and portrayed murder victim John McIntyre in Black Mass, directed by Scott Cooper, and based on a true story.[3] Carter appeared in the drama The Revenant (2015), opposite Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu. He will also appear in the upcoming film Eat Me opposite Michael Shamus Wiles, directed by Adrian Cruz.
It wasn't long before his acting career picked up as he starting landing roles on some of television's biggest shows. These include shows such as Sons of Anarchy (FX), True Detective (HBO), Ascension (SyFy), and most recently opposite Johnny Depp in the film, Black Mass (Warner Bros.). As he became more successful in his acting career, he started playing music less and less. He had always planned to get back into playing his music when the time was right, but what he didn't know was that time was running out.
In 2006 while Brad was playing shows around Los Angeles, he noticed his hands began to shake. It had progressed so badly that he became embarrassed to play live, as he could no longer hide it. His shakes would later be diagnosed as Essential Tremor, which has no permanent cure. Time was not on Brad's side. If he ever wanted to make a record, he had to act fast.
In 2013, Brad decided to have a brain surgery called Deep Brain Stimulation, or DBS. One only needs to Google Brad Carter Brain Surgery to see hundreds of articles and videos that have gained millions of views, worldwide. These videos show Brad playing his guitar while on the operating table during his actual brain surgery. After his second surgery he knew his time was limited, so Brad set out to make his rock n' roll dreams a reality.
Brain surgery
Nader Pouratian, director of UCLA's Neurosurgical Movement Disorders Program, performed brain surgery on Carter twice, in January and March 2013. The first surgery was to implant electrodes in his brain, and the second was to put wires down his neck. Carter had first noticed tremors in his hands in 2006, which were misdiagnosed as symptoms of Lyme disease by three specialists. During the operation, Carter needed to be awake for the best results, so his doctors suggested that he play guitar during his operation to see when his tremors weakened.
A video recording was made of Carter's operation, which was later posted on YouTube. The video went viral and received media attention worldwide. Carter became known as the "guy playing guitar during brain surgery." The hospital staff had requested the video recording to help allay those suffering from similar diseases who were curious about the surgery.
In the summer of 2013, Brad coordinated a successful Kickstarter campaign with the help of his friends, family, and even strangers from all around the world. Now, after two years and countless months of hard work, sweat and tears, he is ready! He has successfully finished recording his albums. Starting with a five song EP, Fieldhand, he will release in the winter of 2015; followed by his completed full length, Family Name slated for release in 2016.The time has come, and this is only the beginning for Brad Carter.
