JOY HILSMAN THOMAS
Joy is a Southerner. She was born in Atlanta, GA and grew up in the small town of Williston, South Carolina. Except for a four-year 'retirement' stint to Fripp Island, SC, she has lived in Aiken County since 1980. Two of her greatest passions have always been writing and photography. "I was 'taking pictures' at a very young age with an old Brownie camera and writing poems on toilet paper with my mother's black eyebrow pencil at the age of five, getting in a lot of trouble for both. I most enjoy it when my photos pull passion and emotion from the subject and settle them into the viewer so there is communication between the two, continuing long after the viewer has walked away."
Joy has exhibited photography at the Beaufort Art Association gallery in Beaufort, SC, and in the Art Association's several satellite galleries, Fripp Island POA offices, and Beaufort Memorial Hospital. She is a member of the S.C. Writer's Workshop, has written and directed small plays for ACP's Hopeland Garden summer series, and for churches in the area. Her written work has appeared in a number of SCWW anthologies: Horizon, Catfish Stew, and Petigru Review; as well as in Savannah and Aiken County Magazines, The Quill, Rockford Review, Anderie Press, WordSmith, Big Easy Sonnet, Writers Exchange, Poet's Page, California Quarterly, Flights of Fancy, Poetic Page Opus, Potato Eyes, Green River Writers, PoetWorks Press, and others. Two works recently appeared in Petigru Review (His Name Was Home) and in Short Story America Vol. III (Milk Warm).

WINKS AND WILDFLOWERS (a short story – available in Kindle only)
“Winks and Wildflowers” is a short story about a young girl and her siblings and their trek into the forest to escape what they considered a threat to their lives. Interesting tidbit: Do you ever wonder where your work comes from? Is it a memory, a fictitious made-up story pricked by some feeling? “Winks and Wildflowers” came about because of an event unremembered. I was describing the story to my sister one day, having no idea how the thought of such a story came to mind. She smiled and said to me, “I’m surprised you remember that day; you were only about 3 or 4 years old.” I didn’t remember the day. I didn’t remember the event. I still have not recalled a thing about that day. But it came out in this story, almost exactly as it happened. Amazing subconscious memories we have been given, don’t you think?
WHO TOUCHED ME?
People crowd and press against us every day, so that we are affected physically, emotionally, and/or spiritually. Typically, we go on with life, unbothered, unaware that anything extraordinary has happened except that we have encountered an individual or experienced an event. There are those times, however, when someone’s touch or an outside influence alters something within, and we know beyond human perception that we have been affected. We know because the power goes out from us, or moves into us. We sense it, and we are changed. The essays in “Who Touched Me?” represent some of those times. Instances when power reveals that we have been touched.
